We have been thinking about changing our approach to foods (especially after our battle with chunkier purees). We have a few friends who do baby-led weaning, which consists (among other things) of offering the baby a variety of foods in chunks instead of purees. I was eating an apple at lunch with a friend who does baby-led weaning, and James was very interested in my apple, so I held it up to his mouth to see what he would do. He sat there and sucked on the apple with pure delight! Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera...but after this, we decided to try more of a baby-led weaning approach. We moved James to the travel high chair that has a tray (part of the mess with trying finger foods was a result of him pushing food off the table when he tried to pick it up). Then we gave him nice big chunks of foods like apple and let him experiment. Instant success! In one day we went from a baby who refused anything chunkier than sweet potato puree, to a baby who happily eats Cheerios and gnaws on apples.
