After much deliberation over what to do about a tree (Mark saying we had to have one, Sarah not wanting to spend another year finding pine needles everywhere and worrying about cats climbing the tree and knocking it over), Sarah picked up a potted tree from Costco with a few days to go before Christmas. It fit all the requirements - small enough to not take up too much space, heavy enough at the bottom that the cats probably couldn't knock it over, and reusable (Mark's reason for wanting to buy a fake tree).
It turned out to be perfect! It didn't drop needles and the cats left it alone. We put a few of our non-breakable ornaments up and it added a very festive glow to our living room! Now the challenge will be to keep it alive and reuse it again next year!
